During the background check our investigators will be reaching out to some personal contacts, credit checks, criminal records check, and neighborhood visits.
Sometime during the process, we will reach out to you about conducting a polygraph.
At this point your entire packet will be reviewed. If everything is favorable we will discuss a Conditional Offer of Probationary Employment.
You will go to FMRT for a Physical, Psychological Exam, Drug Screening, and Eye Examination.
Everything is done and now it is time to sit down with the Chief of Police and talk about expectations of a Police Officer.

At JPD, we have at least one SRO at every school. In addition to SRO's we have their Sergeant and a Threat Assessment Sergeant.
11th annual RWTL
On August 3, 2024, Jacksonville PD held the 11th annual Running with the Law. This event is a sister event with our National Night Out. All the proceeds from this race goes directly to NC Special Olympics. We invite law enforcement officer from other agencies to participate in this event, several even ran it in uniform! This year we had representatives from Jacksonville PD, Onslow County Sheriff's Office, NC State Highway Patrol, Surf City PD, ECU Health PD, Richlands PD, and NC License and Theft. Make plans to join us for National Night Out on 8/6/24 from 5-9pm at Riverwalk Park.
Jacksonville Police Department Swears In Police Chief Jarad Phelps
On July 29, 2024, Jacksonville Police Department welcomed Jarad Phelps as our new Chief. Chief Phelps is a native of Virginia with 28 years of experience in law enforcement with the Prince William County Police Department. He holds a Master of Public Administration degree from George Mason University and a Bachelor of Political Science degree from James Madison University. Chief Phelps is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the FBI National Executive Institute Associates, the Police Executive Research Forum (SMIP), and the Harvard Kennedy School of Leadership Senior Executives in State and Local Government program. He began his law enforcement career with Prince William County Police Department in 1996.
In his career, he has served on the Search and Rescue Team, the Honor Guard, the SWAT Team, Incident Management Team, Sergeant of the Bicycle Unit, First Sergeant of the Operations Division, Deputy Commander of the Western District, Deputy CID Commander for the Property Crimes Bureau, Deputy CIP Commander for the Youth Services and Special Victims Division, Deputy Bureau Commander for Special Operations, Captain of multiple Divisions, Assistant Chief of Police for Operations, Acting Chief of Police, and Deputy Chief of Police.
Officers play bingo with residents of Carolina Rivers Nursing home
Several of our officers played bingo at a local nursing home on June 14. We, as officers, understand that we are all in different seasons of life. Two of our K9s and their handlers attended the Jacksonville Ospreys game
Jacksonville Ospreys hosted a "Safe Day." Two of our three K9 units were able to attend and answer questions about the program. On the left we see Officer Busby with K9 Brinks and on the right we see Officer Villeneuve with K9 Atlas. Our agency has a total of 4 K9s. Three are working patrol dogs and one is a therapy dog.
